The most effective way to communicate is through video and the technology continues to reflect the new consumer mind state of on demand programming. When TV recording capabilities were first introduced, it changed the landscape of media and entertainment. </span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Not long after that revolutionary breakthrough, we are beginning to see the first signs of an on-demand world on mobile devices. With the mobile device screen sizes getting larger and the Networks getting faster, the sky is the limit. There are already programs that all ow you to watch a live television program on a mobile device. As the cellular infrastructure continues to improve, we will see better resolution and faster connection speeds.</span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">While in the Entertainment Business Masters program at Full-Sail, I have learned a great deal about the many ways that the Entertainment industry can be impacted by breakthroughs in technology. </span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 12.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I plan on using my new expertise, to exploit the mobile advertising wave that is on the horizon. The small screen size was a major issue for mobile advertiser in the past but the new wave of tablets have eliminated many of the restrictions that prevented mobile advertising from being a viable option for many companies. Having gained the knowledge of digital advertising and marketing principles can now advise companies and develop strategies for successful mobile marketing campaigns. </span></div>Hugh Danielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09513919347378829913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1059472446872160543.post-71030601462036780342011-09-28T09:28:00.001-07:002011-09-28T09:28:34.710-07:00Funding Sources<div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">This week I looked at the web sites of a couple companies that serve as sources of funding for small businesses.</span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 15.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The first of which is a company called the Opportunity Finance Network. The aim of the company is to offer affordable and responsible financial products to low-income, low-wealth and disadvantaged people and businesses. The products that they offer help capital flow to opportunity markets outside of the economic mainstream.</span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 15.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The OFN requires qualified companies to fill out a detailed application along with a host of supporting documents ranging from a mission statement to balance sheets to resumes of management. </span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 15.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The site also serves a knowledge resource offering its members a wealth of information on the industry.</span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 15.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The other site that I looked into was The Association for Enterprise Opportunity. The AEO markets itself as a company for micro-enterprise in America. They help underserved, small business entrepreneurs contribute to their communities through business ownership.</span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 15.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 13.0px Arial; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The criteria for this program is not quite as narrow at the OFN. However, their aim of helping entrepreneurs and improving low income communities is similar in nature. They also help entrepreneurs find development organizations to assist in their business endeavors. </span></div><div><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">In week one I researched the most important elements of the business plan based on the opinions of the top venture capital experts.<span> </span>I have taken the advice of these experts and have made several key changes to my business plan.<span> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The first change that I made was to change my business plan to target a wider audience.<span> </span>Instead of simply targeting music consumers, I plan to take a broader approach.<span> </span>The line of products that my company offers now represents a lifestyle for the consumer.<span> </span>We plan to offer a full line of merchandise to complement the music and complete the lifestyle.<span> </span>The offering of these additional items will make it easier for the fans to embrace and identify with the brand as a whole.<span> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Brad Feld’s advice on the executive summary really caught my attention.<span> </span>According to Brad, he ‘doesn’t read business plans, the executive summary is enough…’<span> </span>This tells me that a potential investor will not even read past the executive summary if it doesn’t do a good enough job of piquing the interest of the reader.<span> </span>Also, the executive summary is the place where you describe the team of individuals involved with the business venture.<span> </span>If the people involved don’t have the right background and qualifications, the venture will more than likely fail.<span> </span>I have not only paid close attention to this section of my business plan, I have also taken extra measures to ensure that I have the right pieces in my corporate structure.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Overall, I wanted to be sure that the business model, the team involved and the financial analysis all address the consumer problem and offer a profitable solution to the problem.<span> </span>I will continue to seek the advice of these and other expert investors while I continue to revise and improve my business plan.</div><!--EndFragment--> Hugh Danielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09513919347378829913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1059472446872160543.post-37955753577466468282011-08-08T19:58:00.000-07:002011-08-08T19:59:56.919-07:00Successful Venture Capitalists and their Views on Business Plan Essentials<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Don Valentine</span></b></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />

Don has a B.A. from Fordham University and is credited with the foundry of National and Fairchild semiconductor companies. In 1972 he founded Sequoia Capital, a venture capital investment firm in California’s Silicon Valley. He was one of the original investors in companies like Apple, Atari, Logic, Oracle, Cisco, Electronic Arts, Google, YouTube and many others. The firm is widely regarded as one of the top firms in the Silicon valley and according to an article posted on washingtonpost.com, 19% of the NASDAQ’s value is made up of firms Sequoia Capital has funded.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">Don Valentine and Sequoia Capital seek business plans that target large markets and rich customers. According to sequoiacap.com a good business plan should give as much information with as few words as possible. The plan should explicitly describe a consumer problem and offer an effective and profitable solution. The plan should also give details on the business model, the team involved and a solid financial analysis.</span></div><br />

According to another recent article found on <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/07/05/online-ad-spending-50-bilion/">mashable.com</a>, spending on video ads reached $1.42 billion last year. David Hallerman (eMarketer’s principal analyst) attributes this growth to the fact that, “video generates greater audience attention than any of the other digital ad formats.” As the world’s networks continue to expand and connection speeds improve, we will continue to see and increase in video advertising.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Mobile:<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: 0.5in;">Another segment of the Internet market that is rapidly growing and driving the growth of online marketing is the mobile market. JP Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth said in a <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-zenith-pulls-back-a-bit-on-global-ad-spend-forecast-display-holds-stead/">paidcontent.org</a> article that mobile will be the single biggest factor accelerating web growth in the coming years. However, in the future, we can look forward to faster mobile data delivery from next-generation networks that will increase connection speeds ten times over by the year 2015. The online advertising industry will also benefit from the growing popularity of smart phone and tablet devices. The increase in screen size and functionality of these new devices ultimately means infinitely more possibilities for advertisers.</div>Hugh Danielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09513919347378829913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1059472446872160543.post-25156822720520276382011-07-11T18:40:00.000-07:002011-07-12T11:57:13.441-07:00The Digital Landscape for Advertisers<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnIWxvY9AHBo7HKHJE-XKMVKJJ5k4oAq9-dxYIqTKA42O0fKwhisQ9vr6Gc26aEMXLFoNnwXwYlN5Lg4cez7a7OSq8EXkDj4JYaVbuN_Z6YpNJKppFxg3KfBW9VaB7ibn1xRUCDpzr8g/s1600/Screen+shot+2011-07-12+at+11.40.39+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnIWxvY9AHBo7HKHJE-XKMVKJJ5k4oAq9-dxYIqTKA42O0fKwhisQ9vr6Gc26aEMXLFoNnwXwYlN5Lg4cez7a7OSq8EXkDj4JYaVbuN_Z6YpNJKppFxg3KfBW9VaB7ibn1xRUCDpzr8g/s320/Screen+shot+2011-07-12+at+11.40.39+AM.png" width="312" /></a></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><link href="file://localhost/Users/YaRoYaLHighNeSs/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip/0clip_filelist.xml" rel="File-List"></link> <style>

According to Kantar Media intelligence, the digital media’s share of the world ad market has more than doubled since 2006. In 2006, digital media represented just 8 percent of the market. In seemingly no time, digital media advertising now represents over 17% of the total world advertising market.</span>

</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">One of the main problems with the Internet and the mindset of on-demand programming is that the viewer/potential consumer is trained to skip over annoying ads. This is why a lot of banner and pop-up style advertisements have become nearly obsolete. The target audience must be engaged in a manner that is conducive to the message being welcomed by the consumers. The Internet’s explosive growth has led to a demand for creative advertising on the Web. Advertisements must fully exploit the strengths of the Internet medium and extend the audience engagement in ways that TV can’t.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">The new target audience is beginning to go to the Internet for on demand programming. As companies like Netflix and YouTube continue to grow, they continue to captivate massive audiences while advertisements are creatively woven through the content featured on these sites. Whether it’s a music video or an interactive game, corporations of all shapes and sizes are competing to make meaningful impressions on new consumers. After all, advertising is <i>any </i>time a sponsor pays to deliver a message through a medium. The possibilities for branding and activation are endless.</span>

<span style="font-size: large;">of the NBA is set to expire on June 30, 2011. Just like football, if a resolution is not reached during this off season the next season will be at risk of being shortened or canceled. We have all seen how the NFL lockout has played out when the negotiations broke down and the litigation begun. It has been a very messy situation and the parties involved with the NBA will avoid following in those footsteps if they know what’s good for them.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwYJQCwKeVqaDFHRHxYuw9kRGI_7iwTBofQHgLm9lngRjkbtGgixXg4wtmMZg-_Y01uesFgM1Id107ePBicOAGTO57renzy4ECjU1indIXcs_Gh1MKCx2GPiYkibHxOqrz00n_IiIPZw/s1600/davisternlockout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwYJQCwKeVqaDFHRHxYuw9kRGI_7iwTBofQHgLm9lngRjkbtGgixXg4wtmMZg-_Y01uesFgM1Id107ePBicOAGTO57renzy4ECjU1indIXcs_Gh1MKCx2GPiYkibHxOqrz00n_IiIPZw/s320/davisternlockout.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="font-size: large;">There are several issues that have led to the current dispute between the NBA players and the owners. The most significant issue has been that many NBA owners claim they are in the red and that the league as a whole is losing money. Owners want to increase their portion of basketball related income. The players currently get 57% and the owners get 43%. The implementation of a hard salary cap as opposed to the current soft salary cap is also a big issue. The owners are also looking to cut player salaries by about one third and shorten the length of contracts while eliminating exceptions like signing bonuses or deferred compensation. NBA Commissioner, David Stern, has recently proposed a “flex cap” which would allow richer teams to exceed the target of $62 million per team but this proposal has been opposed by the players and legal analysts have been skeptical that anything other that a hard salary cap would be effective.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Hopefully the two sides can agree soon because 2 major professional sports lockouts in one year could have a devastating impact on an already struggling economy.</span><br />

The deal will reportedly net the conference around $3 billion with $21 million a year going to each program. The two networks will share game coverage and take turns broadcasting the conference championship game. <br />
<br />
The Pac-12 conference also announced the establishment of a new company called Pac-12 Media Enterprises and a new Pac-12 Network dedicated to the distribution of content on all platforms and devices. This landmark deal is the largest ever in collegiate athletics. The deal marks the first time that the Pac-12’s institutions would share equally in the revenues generated by the new deal.<br />

These sports generate millions for the schools that they play for. Many think that the athletes should be compensated because they are essentially the lifeblood of the sports that they play and millions are made off of their talent and hard work. Others feel that a free education is enough. The current NCAA rule prohibits players from receiving any “extra benefits” but whenever there is a scandal it seems as if the players suffer the majority of the consequences. Where is the justice for the other parties involved? If a coach is involved, he may be fired or fined but we have seen start over with another program. <br />
<br />
According to the following articles, a new legislation will soon change all that. The newly passed Texas legislation is cracking down on dirty sports agents with punishments of jail time. Check em out.<br />

<br />
Joe Flacco is coming off a career year in which he became the Baltimore Ravens’ all-time leading passer but the Season ended on a bad note (see video) and the Baltimore Ravens have publicly stated that Flacco will not receive a contract extension this year.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="325" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RozPFAvHRXg" width="550"></iframe> <br />
<br />
Flacco was the Raven’s 1st round draft pick in 2008 and is still has two years remaining on his rookie contract. He has surpassed all of the expectations and truly out performed his contract. However, Flacco remains frustrated that talks on a new contract have not begun; mainly because the NFL lockout has had prohibited contact between the teams and their players during this offseason. Flacco became even more disgruntled when Quarterback coach Jim Zorn was fired earlier this year. "I'm kind of taking it personal," Flacco said. "You're saying that you're not happy with the position. I'm not sure if there is any truth to that, but that's the vibe you're sending to your quarterback. I feel like I'm being attacked."<br />
<br />
But it only gets worse for Flacco who is thought to be worried that his new deal is not even a priority for the team. The Ravens recently selected QB Tyrod Taylor in the NFL draft and it is expected that when the lockout ends the Ravens will be scrambling to re-sign players with less than two years left on their contracts. Also, All-Pro defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is due a contract extension before Flacco and is considered by many to be a higher priority. I’d love to see how this one plays out.<br />

<b>Albert Pujols Contract Negotiation.</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP88c_BVMgtuHiRmP-N1Ru6_2XyE13nd39wY79vENYCWoVE540c9ZrW1SRSRi265mfsvj-b-wxrq5MEIVZCe3X7F4gfXcWS5aH0z-FiqfmjFNLHBwR_R7s8bQwYpUG89AUQwoXsXi6Tg/s1600/Albert-Pujols.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP88c_BVMgtuHiRmP-N1Ru6_2XyE13nd39wY79vENYCWoVE540c9ZrW1SRSRi265mfsvj-b-wxrq5MEIVZCe3X7F4gfXcWS5aH0z-FiqfmjFNLHBwR_R7s8bQwYpUG89AUQwoXsXi6Tg/s320/Albert-Pujols.jpg" width="204" /></a> It has been reported that Albert Pujols is seeking a 10-year, $300 million contract extension. This would be the largest contract in MLB history. Yes, even larger that the infamous 10-year, $275 million contract that Alex Rodriguez received in 2008. Albert still has one year left on his current contract. However, after this season he is set to become a free agent. Albert has been adamant about not negotiating during the season so as not to be a distraction to the team. And now that the new season is under way all signs indicate that the negotiations between Pujols and the Cardinals have indeed ceased. The Cardinals are still considered the front runner to re-sign Pujols since the Yankees and the Red Sox will not be participating in the Albert Pujols sweepstakes, But only time will tell…<br />

<br />
Products carrying the Los Doyers emblem have been sold exclusively by local street venders and merchandisers until, in August of 2010, the Los Angeles Dodgers, LLC filed two applications for trademark of the mark Los Doyers. The Dodgers subsequently began sending out cease and desist letters to retailers of the merchandise who had been enjoying healthy profits form the sale of Los Doyers merchandise.<br />

<br />
Another similar situation resulted from the rise in popularity of the New Orleans Saints. When the Saints won the NFL’s Super Bowl in 2010, the phrase became even more popular and a controversy arose over who had the rights to ‘Who Dat’. <br />
<br />
The phrase came from a chant – “Who dat say they gon beat the Saints” – and has been a mainstay at the Superdome since the 1980’s. Two brothers and longtime Saints fans claim they own the only federal trademark of the phrase and are also the owners of WhoDat Inc. Many credit the 1983 song titled <i>Who Dat</i> with creation of the popular name but its use has been traced back to the minstrel shows of the 1930's.<br />
<br />
Despite the fan backlash and the unknown origins of the phrase, the NFL has implemented an aggressive cease and desist campaign claiming they own the rights to the trademark. <br />

Two of the biggest stories of the past decade in sports were baseballs performance enhancing drug scandal and Adidas’ buying of Reebok for $3.8 billion. The drug scandal has dominated headlines while the big Reebok deal may have slipped past some consumers. However, both have had a profound impact on sports and the businesses behind them. <br />
<br />
According to a 2005 <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1994433">ESPN Article</a>, 52% of fans still believe that Barry Bonds should still deserved to be in the Hall of Fame. The Scandal continues to grab headlines as Barry Bonds’ perjury trial is currently taking place. As mentioned in the above CNBC video, while the game’s biggest names were involved in the scandal and the MLB received a black eye but business continued to thrive. <br />
<br />
Unlike the MLB’s scandal, the Reebok/Adidas deal has turned out to be very bad for business. The deal was originally intended to increase the market share of Adidas and better challenge the industry’s biggest competitor. Initially, US shares of the company stock rose 30 percent upon the announcement of the deal. However, since then the deal has been a disaster. According to the CNBC article, both of the brands were made weaker. Before the deal Adidas and Reebok had 10 and 8 percent market share respectively. Since the deal their Adidas market share has dwindled to 6 percent and Reebok’s share is down to about 2 percent. <br />
<br />
The situation for Reebok continues to worsen as reports surface that Reebok may lose its contract with the NFL (National Football League). The NFL is rumored to be negotiating a deal with Nike for the 2012 season that may leave Reebok out in the cold. A 2010 <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-10-12/adidas-falls-as-cnbc-says-reebok-unit-may-lose-contract-with-nfl-to-nike.html">Bloomberg article</a> quoted Citigroup analyst Kate McShane who stated in investor notes that, “Reebok’s NFL contract represents about $350 million of its $565 million in U.S. apparel revenues.” Needless to say, this would further devastate the business and slash revenues. <br />

</style><span style="font-size: large;">I had the pleasure of visiting Austin, TX for the 25th anniversary celebration of the SXSW conference. While at the conference, I was able to attend several very informative panels. </span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">On Thursday March 17, I attended the BET sponsored “Baby Im A Star!” The panel featured several industry leaders including Stephen Hill (President of Music programming at BET), Troy Carter (Lady Gaga’s manager), L. Londell McMillan (Prominent entertainment lawyer and publisher of <i>The Source</i> Magazine) and artists Melanie Fiona and J. Cole. The panel, moderated by Kelly Griffin (BET Networks), was an interactive discussion of how to get major exposure in a multi-platform music environment. </span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3AKEAOxtGuPhKoLtJBMJnpxUtQ3aRTcWrwMYRU9S2Vurpp21YEshkvvrJOpmC66qd6saiYE-BRzPqnEO1_yLGS0rEn4XsIiJJWbIUO5asfq3e0mGCF9FoXvILc5KVK-S_aD_ZN4VGYw/s1600/IMG_2985.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3AKEAOxtGuPhKoLtJBMJnpxUtQ3aRTcWrwMYRU9S2Vurpp21YEshkvvrJOpmC66qd6saiYE-BRzPqnEO1_yLGS0rEn4XsIiJJWbIUO5asfq3e0mGCF9FoXvILc5KVK-S_aD_ZN4VGYw/s400/IMG_2985.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">After the panel I was able to talk to a couple of the panelists about negotiating in the current music industry climate. Here’s what they had to say:</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">On the topic of affiliation, McMillan says Relationships matter. In order to negotiate a position as a star, you must understand the value of relationships. The prevalence of search engine tools on the Internet means that the cream doesn’t always rise to the top. Forming key relationships will ensure that the product is reaching the target audience.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

She was often prompted to use her sexuality to enhance her career but she remained true to herself. She cited Sade as an example of being sexy without being sexually overt. This is also closely related to the issue of autonomy. She had to negotiate a position where her thoughts and ideas were respected. This is why she was able to make her own decisions with regard to her image and her career.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

He explained that he doesn’t listen to anything and by the time someone surfaces on his radar, they have gained the approval of many fans and industry executives. Artists are far better off perfecting their crafts and developing their talents to the point where they are ready to be presented to the public. “Fortunately Gaga came to me with the fishnet stockings and hit singles in hand.” Troy said. Being a complete artist gives leverage in negotiations between artist and company.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

He also touches on some successful and unsuccessful marketing strategies and the reasons why they either work or do not work. He goes on to explain the effect that the demise of the record industry has had on the marketing and advertising industries. These articles were chosen because they both show the role that art and entertainment play in education. They are a great compliment to each other. One lays out the flaws in the current education system and the other gives an optimistic outlook on the future of Internet video and its impact on the evolution of education.<br />

<br />
The first is Ken Robinson’s Changing Education Paradigms. In this video Ken uses beautiful dry-erase illustrations to tell a story of how we, as a nation, have become hamstrung by an antiquated public school system. <br />
He built trust with the audience by providing factual information and making some very strong assertions about rising drop-out rates, schools’ dwindling stake in the arts and a fictitious ADHD epidemic.<br />
He makes an interesting point that the current public school system was designed for very different societal needs and how we should be educating children to take their place in the economies of the 21st century. Instead we categorize and separate the “academic” from the “non-academic.” Being judged in this way leads to many brilliant people believing that they are not. Sadly, it’s the kids with creativity and artistic ability that are the victims. Ken call for a move away from standardization and towards divergent thinking. <br />
<br />
<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="550" height="325" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zDZFcDGpL4U" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe> <br />
<br />
The next video offers what is the most likely solution to the problems created by an inadequate school system. In Who let this guy on the stage, TED founder Chris Anderson talks about the future of Internet video and the change in the evolution of skills. Anderson introduces the concept of crowd-accelerated participation. The concept is not entirely new. However, Internet video has amplified this effect as there are now more groups and online communities that allow for content to be shared more freely. According to Anderson, viewers collectively watch over 80 million hours of YouTube everyday and estimates that in the next 4 years 90 percent of the web’s data will be video. The proliferation of Internet video has changed not only changed entertainment, it has also changed the way that scientists and other professionals exchange information.<br />
<br />
Anderson goes on to describe the new ways in which we learn and respond. Thus, completing the learning cycle in a way that was never previously possible.<br />
Anderson argues that students no longer need to have their potential ruined by lousy teachers; they can now sit in front of the World’s best. And from a talent perspective, we have an opportunity to choose the world’s best from a larger pool. This amazing video shows the power of Internet video from a different perspective. We as a people are on the verge of the biggest learning cycle in the history of the world.Hugh Danielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09513919347378829913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1059472446872160543.post-69596636222004203132010-12-19T18:36:00.000-08:002011-05-15T12:50:25.618-07:00Lupe Fiasco On The Future Of Hip-Hop<object width="550" height="325"><param name="movie" value="http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/e/16711680/wshhFLbDAQdCKWrg4YtC"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/e/16711680/wshhFLbDAQdCKWrg4YtC" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" width="550" height="325"></embed></object><br />

Early in the interview Lupe states his firm opinion opposing 360 deals. The 360 deal format emerged as a result of the decline in record sales. In an attempt increase the profit margin for the major record labels this new deal structure was created and it has polarized the industry. Artists have been largely opposed to this particular deal structure because it allows the record company to tap into revenue generated from performances and merchandise which has traditionally been the main source income for artists. In principal this means less of a percentage for the artist but my question is whether or not this automatically means less money. If the company can help to generate more total revenue by helping with live show productions and the merchandise sales then the deal could potentially be lucrative for the artist. Right?<br />
<br />
The deal will only be beneficial for the artist if the record company is ready, willing and able to support the efforts of the artist and expand the artist brand. A lot of artist who experienced success in the era of heavy CD sales have already established and built brands under the old industry format. Also, many artists have experienced independent success and have very profitable businesses. Therefore, many of these artists and companies feel that a 360 deal would take away artist revenue without necessarily contributing to the building of the brand. On the other hand, a new artist without an established brand or fan base may have an extra incentive to do such a deal. <br />
<br />
The deal structure in general may be more beneficial to newer less established artists and with the old format being phased out a lot of the artist who were successful in it will ultimately be left out in the cold.<br />
<br />
As artists and Major record labels compete and scramble to find the next lucrative business model, many of yesterday’s popular artist will find that without serious adaptation they will not be able to survive. The industry is changing in a way that is forcing artists to be creative not only with their music but with their business strategies also.Hugh Danielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09513919347378829913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1059472446872160543.post-59278913978876140182010-11-30T19:54:00.001-08:002011-05-15T14:11:10.225-07:00Album reviews 11/23<div style="font-family: inherit;"><link href="file://localhost/Users/YaRoYaLHighNeSs/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip/0clip_filelist.xml" rel="File-List"></link> <link href="file://localhost/Users/YaRoYaLHighNeSs/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip/0clip_editdata.mso" rel="Edit-Time-Data"></link> <style>

</style></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">This week I will review some of the most significant Hip Hop and R&B releases from major artists in the week of 11/23/2010. I review mainly based on three things: First I rate the artist creativity and content, next I judge based on the production and the overall quality of the music. And lastly I rate the commercial appeal of the album from a sales perspective. The biggest difference between the ratings in my blog and other ratings is the fact that I always rate from the perspective of the artist’s fan as opposed to an average critic. I fully understand that different artists cater to their own unique demographics. In other words, I rate from the perspective of the fan and judge based on whether or not the album is worthy of purchase. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

The album is the sequel to Bank’s debut “The Hunger for More(2004).” HFM2 is laced with hit singles that helped generate a healthy momentum leading up to the release. Songs like “Beamer, Benz, and Bentley” saw heavy success at radio and served as the launching pad for the album's release. Bank’s hiatus doesn't seem to have slowed him down at all. He is now more popular than ever and was able to build up a healthy anticipation for the album. He definitely follows through with what his true fans have been waiting for. His trademark sharp delivery and </span><span style="font-size: large;">potent lyrics are backed by </span><span style="font-size: large;">very solid production throughout. Lloyd Bank's loyal fans will appreciate this offering in that it is very well rounded. He manages to satisfy his current fan base while gaining new fans by way of some clever collaborations with artists like Kanye West and Lloyd. Overall the album is a project that is well worth the purchase price.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

The music on the surface is obviously well polished and Kanye’s tireless work ethic shines through on the production of every track. The album continues to shine as you dig deeper. This album is laced with underlying themes and emotions that people can truly relate to. From beginning to end the album is masterfully composed and the lyrics are unrivaled. I applaud Kanye for being one of the most prominent artist of today yet social commentary is a mainstay in his music.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"Hey teacher teacher tell me how do you respond to students, </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">and refresh the page and restart the memory.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Re-spark the soul and re-build the energy. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We stop the ignorance, we kill the enemy..." </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Kanye has always been the type to challenge the status quo and push forward the art form as a whole. The Dark Twisted Fantasy is a far departure from traditional album and song formatting. Many songs on the album are 6 minutes or over and there is even a 9 minute version of the hit single "Runaway."</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The album was preceded by the release of the short film also entitled "Runaway." The film, which features very strong imagery, is the perfect complement to the album. Kanye combines the very different worlds of hip hop and ballerinas in a way that hasn't quite been captured in movies or music videos. His musical production style has laid the foundation for a similar film making style in which the traditional rules are frequently broken.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This album is a definite must buy and the short film is a must see.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />

He stays true to his fans and delivers what they have come to know him for. The production is on point but the subject matter can dwindle at certain points throughout the project. This is to be expected from Currensy to some extent. There are plenty of weed references and a level of quality that is above average. However there is not much pushing the envelope for Currensy on this effort. Just alot of sticking to the script. This album is well worth a listen and even a download but I wont be spending my money for this one. </span><br />

I recently sat down with prominent music video director Taj Stansberry to discuss his industry experiences and how he continues to thrive in this declining industry. He is definitely doing his thing. I consider myself a visionary and a dreamer. I make thoughts and dreams become a reality. I love being inspired and I love learning.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">I really enjoy and am appreciative of the honor to visually represent someone’s music and when I do that I try to put just as much or more effort into the visual as the artist put into the songs.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What changes in technology have had the biggest impact on the industry since you‘ve been in it?<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">Cameras… cameras man. Cannon has put out these 5D and 7D cameras that can shoot HD video with all of these different lenses, adapters, and filters along with these downloads and firmwares. Your work can look really good and it’s not as expensive as the red camera or obviously film cameras… And so everyone has the opportunity. All you have to do is press record and you can start practicing and the quality can be very close to what you see on TV. With everyone doing that, it has increased the amount of content on web sites like worldstarhiphop.com and all of the other viral video sites. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">So now, with a camera, Final Cut Pro, a hard drive and a laptop you can shoot a music video, you can shoot a commercial, you can do anything you want. They’ve made it easy for a consumer to become the next Spike Lee, or the next Michael Mann or Spike Jonze. There are now more music video directors than ever.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Given the oversaturation of the industry with new directors and producers, how do you see the quality of videos being affected?<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">Well, talent speaks for itself and although a camera can enhance your work, it can’t give you talent. It’s easy to recognize real film-makers. A camera can’t make you a film-maker… that’s one thing you can’t buy at the store. But at the same time, there are recording artists that don’t have the budget and just want the cheap price… just simple content to put on the internet and basically be seen. In that case, you may not want to pay for the talent. You just want the person that has the camera and knows how to get it done. This would allow you to put out a few videos per week.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">So, for that, you just need the kid with the camera who knows how to press record, and cut it. You can fix things in post[production] and put your two cents in and he’s not going to charge you a lot. So there is a demand for music videos of all different quality levels but obviously the goal is to maximize the quality with limited resources. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>With music videos getting less TV airplay and other media outlets losing ground to the internet, where do you see the music video industry going?<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">Hopefully not away... It has treated me well and I’ve had a lot of success in this industry. I know that the industry isn’t going anywhere. With the VMA’s (Video Music Awards) and things like that, we know that there is still interest in the music video. There may not be as much money as there once was but the interest is still very high and that’s why music videos are still being produced. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">Quality music videos are still being made, maybe less often but this just means we have to work harder. Talent and hard work will get the job done and everything else will fall to the wayside. You have to work hard and continue to be creative in order to stay in the small circle that’s getting smaller by the day. So I just continue to do what I do, continue to grow, build my resume, build my reel and ultimately my brand.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What things have you and your company <i>The Popular Kid</i> done to stay profitable in the industry?<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">I’ve created more work for myself per artist and more opportunities. I’m now not just offering to do one music video. I’m going for it all. I want to do <i>all</i> of the artist’s music videos. I want to do the viral videos, the album cover artwork and the photo shoots for anything that the artist may need… and just remain consistent. I’m basically going for it all because the budgets <i>have </i>been cut, for music videos in particular. So I asked myself, ‘what can I do to stay profitable?’ You have to bring more to the table and work harder… create more work and find more ways to use talent in order to maximize profit.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>So what’s in the future for you?<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">The next step for me is feature films. That’s where I’m going. I still have a love for music and music videos. I love making visuals for songs and being forever attached to that song. Being forever attached to Nas’s “Hero” or artists like Ne-Yo, Rhianna, Ludacris or Jeezy and their careers is extremely gratifying. Especially working with artists like Nio tha Gift, who is a rising young star. When he does finally get his moment it will be a great honor to be able to say, ‘I was a part of that!’ To contribute to the success of an artist, that’s the greatest honor.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">Diddy is obviously hurt at the missed opportunity of signing Jay Electronica and he has never made any direct statement to indicate otherwise. Diddy of all people should know that the business is never personal and to make a business decision solely based on a friendship would be foolish. After all, he has a very well established reputation of verbally abusing and taking advantage of his artists. Day 26, Shyne, The Lox, Black Rob, G-dep, Mase, (and pretty much everyone else who has been signed to Diddy) have all made claims of shady business practices on the part of Diddy. Although Diddy seemingly continues be successful, his lack of integrity will always hold him back. Whether or not all these things are true is not necessarily important. The fact still remains that the rumors have let to a consensus on Diddy as a shady businessman. That’s not to say he couldn’t change his reputation but he has a long way to go. As for Jay Electronica…. Who can blame you?? </div><br />

Kanye West is one of the most creative minds that we have in the music industry. He constantly challenges the antiquated concepts that restrict us as artists and people.This blog post is in response to a video interview in which Kanye West speaks on many of his most memorable media moments including the infamous Taylor Swift stage crashing incident. However, I wanted to concentrate on the portion of the interview where he discusses the influence that society and the media has had on his career and the industry as a whole. Kanye speaks of his struggle to stay creative while the media and society encourage us to conform to the standards that they deem appropriate. In the interview he recites these thought provoking lyrics from one of his songs:<br />
<br />
"Jesus died for our sins. Michael [Jackson] died for the sins of our media.<br />
Jesus had the bible, [Michael Jackson] had Wikipedia."<br />
<br />
He goes on to explain how he fights the same battle that Michael Jackson and other brilliant minds have fought, only he does it with explanations. And in doing so he feels as though he speaks for all creatives. He talks about being subjected to the scrutiny of the media as well as the blogs and how that has impacted him as a person.<br />
<br />
"I don't base my taste level on the what the trends are or what the common perception is."<br />
<br />
In my opinion, Kanye's non-conformance is what has made him so successful as an artist. After all, the main goal of an artist is to be creative but the industry allows for some artist to experience success by following a certain formula or presenting the public with concepts that are not necessarily unique.<br />
<br />
He goes on to explain his frustration with the music industry award system and how many artists do not get the recognition that they deserve. He provides some very interesting insight into his perspective as a well respected artist in the industry and his take on the inequities that he has experienced in the industry.<br />
He feels that his recent experiences have made him a much more expressive artist due to the fact that he has had so much taken away from him and ultimately has relieved him of the fear that suppressed his creativity.<br />

There are countless examples of this happening. Whatever the cause, some entertainers and athletes simply cannot stay out of trouble. From Lil Wayne, to Gucci Mane to a host of athletes, trouble seems to follow them everywhere they go. With all of the legal fees, time spent behind bars and the loss of wages, one would think that there is enough incentive for celebrities to stay out of jail.<br />
<br />
But are there some advantages of an artist spending time behind bars? Unlike many athletes, entertainers have more than one source of income. So while they will miss out on performance revenues they can tap into other revenue streams to make up for the loss. Rappers T.I., Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne have all constructed effective strategies to stay relevant and satisfy their fan bases to the point that their physical presence was hardly missed. Lil Wayne spent the majority of this year in jail. However he dropped two albums and was recently named one of the Forbes magazine's top "Cash Kings."<br />

Maybe. But when faced with an adverse situation, the only option is to make the best out of it. And while jail is nothing to be proud of, these artist can certainly be proud of turning a negative into a positive. Positive cash flow.<br />
<br />
But what happens when the positives outweigh the negatives?<br />
Just ask T.I.
